Chelsea have just dropped a fascinating bombshell out of nowhere.

Maybe we just missed it – although that seems unlikely given that we aim to cover All. We’re sure we haven’t heard Renato Veiga’s name mentioned once since this transfer window opened – or even ever in relation to Chelsea.

However, Fabrizio Romano has just released an update which exclusively claims that the Blues have reached an agreement to sign the left-footed defender from Basel for €15m, with personal terms already agreed.

We love it when a deal falls through like this, it really does take us back to the days when you could still get caught out by a transfer. A left-footed defender, Romano says the Portugal international has the potential to play left-back, defensive midfield or centre-back.

Born in Lisbon, he left Sporting for FC Basel last summer for €4.6m, after impressing during a six-month loan spell at Bundesliga side Augsburg a year ago.

Where talent fits in

We still don’t know exactly what Chelsea’s co-sporting directors are planning for our defence, which only makes things harder to understand. Will Veiga go on loan to Strasbourg? Will he come into the team while Trevoh Chalobah leaves? Will someone else go on loan while Veiga stays, or will he move to another club? At this point, we really have no idea.

For all we know, he could play in midfield. He has experience in that area as well. And we would need a lineman. But what about Lesley Ugochukwu? There is no clear answer.

Romano and other insiders who missed the chance to hear even a whisper of the deal will have to provide more information in the coming days.
