Cristiano Ronaldo surprised the Euro 2024 host broadcaster after opting to allow Bruno Fernandes to take a free-kick during Portugal’s quarter-final against France.

Ronaldo had been criticised by fans in Portugal’s round of 16 tie for his dominance of free-kicks, although he rarely troubled the goal.

The 39-year-old particularly attracted anger on social media when he attempted to score from an almost impossible angle against Slovenia.

Ronaldo was left wanting during the first half of Portugal’s clash with France, choosing to pass up the chance to take a free-kick from the edge of the box.

The forward was seen in discussion with Fernandes as the pair assessed the free-kick.

The decision appeared to catch the cameraman off guard, with the host broadcaster focusing on Ronaldo’s preparations to take the free-kick.

As the camera focused on Ronaldo’s face, it quickly panned back after Fernandes struck the ball.

The Portugal and Manchester United star’s shot eventually floated harmlessly over the French goal.

Ronaldo will return to free-kick duty in the second half after Fernandes was substituted as the quarter-final remains goalless.

Their only success came against Spain at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
