New weight room completed for BYU basketball program

A new and improved weight room has been completed for the BYU basketball program. On Friday, BYU Director of Strength and Conditioning and Sports Science Michael Davie announced the completion of a nine-month project to upgrade the BYU basketball weight room. The weight room is located inside BYU’s basketball annex, replacing an older weight room that was in the same location. The basketball annex is a training facility located next to the Marriott Center, which was completed five years ago.

“I’ve been here for nine months and I’ve been trying to turn the program into an NBA facility,” Davie said. “We’ve been working on a new weight room for nine months and we’re really excited to show you what we have to offer. With the technology and the equipment, and the variety of equipment that we have to really train guys in different ways … we can’t wait to start training and using the facility and turning it into an NBA-caliber facility. We can really improve performance and start helping players prepare for the NBA, but also play college basketball at the highest level.”

The basketball annex completely changed the caliber of facilities for the BYU basketball program. Before the annex was built, the basketball program practiced in an old weight room at Smith Fieldhouse and the Richards Building. Jimmer Fredette even joked about being kicked out of “RB” when he didn’t have a wristband. BYU’s investment in the annex helped them attract a coach of Kevin Young’s caliber and helped Young attract the high-profile recruits who signed with BYU.
