Woman Pays 0 For DNA Test, Can’t Stop Laughing When She Sees Results

A woman wanting to know more about her ancestry took a DNA test and got an unexpected result.

Shirley Huang, 25, lives in California but was born and raised in Hawaii after her parents immigrated to the United States from China.

Wanting to discover her origins and family history, Huang paid $100 for a 23&Me test, and her results got a huge reaction when she shared them on TikTok on June 10.

In a video that garnered 355,000 likes and 2.4 million views, the administrative assistant revealed that she is 100 percent Chinese. And on top of that, all of her ancestry comes from one region: Guangdong province.

She wrote on the clip: “I’m not paying 23andMe $100 to tell me I’m 100% Chinese.”

Talk to NewsweekHuang admitted she was “shocked” by the results, expecting mixed Asian heritage due to China’s proximity to other countries.

“I remember laughing in surprise that I was completely Chinese,” she said, because she “didn’t know it was possible to be 100 percent anything on a DNA test.”

“It turns out that my ancestors were originally from Guangdong and never left, making my parents the first generation to leave southern China,” she said.

Huang said she took the test to learn more about her heritage, as her parents “didn’t know much.” Both of her grandfathers died before she was born, and she didn’t have any photos of older generations.

Her father had also recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and diabetes, and she took the DNA+Health test to see if she carried any associated genes, which fortunately she did not.

“I’m really glad I took the test because it gave me valuable information about my ancestry, my health and traits that I wouldn’t have known otherwise,” she said.

Consumer genetic testing conducted outside of a medical setting, by companies such as 23andMe and AncestryDNA, has become increasingly popular in recent years. In 2021, Statista predicted that the market would reach nearly $1.2 billion by 2028.

Huang’s video generated a huge response, with thousands of people sharing both their own stories and their reaction to Huang’s results, with one admitting to having “NEVER seen 100% of anything” in terms of genetic ancestry testing.

Another shared that her husband had become 100% Japanese, writing: “I didn’t know what he was expecting. He was born and raised in Japan and all his relatives are Japanese too.”

And one of them wrote: “BROTHER, THE FIRST THING MY PARENTS SAID WAS ‘I COULD HAVE TOLD YOU FOR FREE’.”

Huang said Newsweek She laughed off many of the comments on her post, and didn’t let the negative comments claiming she “must be inbred” get to her, because “I know that’s not true, and arguing with people in the comments is pointless.”

She added: “I just want to say that everyone is beautiful and unique, whether you are one race or mixed race.

“If you are curious about your ancestry or want to connect with relatives, taking a DNA test is definitely worth it.”
