Martha Stewart defends herself against ‘harsh’ comments about her living room renovation

Even interior design maven Martha Stewart and her newly renovated Maine home aren’t immune to the internet’s brutal criticism.

The hubbub began online after Stewart shared progress photos of her redecorated living room on Instagram last week.

“We swapped out the gray-blue upholstery in the living room for a creamy, pale butter yellow,” the TV personality captioned the photo.

“The library is now much more comfortable and the faux bois table is now the game table. I love the rustic and elegant charm of this lovely 1925 home,” she added.

While Stewart is happy with the redesign, the internet doesn’t seem to agree.

“Looks old and stuffy,” one person wrote.

Another commented: “To be honest, you could hire a better decorator.”

“A confusing room with no single focal point…maybe a good design for a first class airport lounge,” someone else wrote.

Another compared it to “a Marriott suite lounge in 1987.”

All of the angry comments caught Stewart’s attention, prompting her to defend her decorating skills against “harsh judgment” in a separate Instagram post.

“I rarely read every comment that comes in after I post, but since I was so happy with the transformation of my Maine living room, I scrolled through many of the comments and was surprised at the harsh judgment displayed by many,” she captioned the post.

Stewart then explained that she and her “Maine helpers” spent three hours removing old furniture from the room and adding new pieces.

“This was not a professional ‘decorator’ installation. This was an attempt at a quick and efficient makeover. Transforming a house into a home or a room into a beautiful living space takes much more than three hours,” she wrote.

While many of Stewart’s followers continued to criticize the redesign in his response, some chimed in to rave about the unfinished piece.

“I don’t care what all the negative reviews say, it’s beautiful!! I love the yellow, so calm and relaxing,” one person wrote. “Shame on them for being so harsh in their comments.”

Another commented: “Can’t wait to see the finishing touches 💕.”
