French left-wing alliance poised for surprise victory over Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen

Paris | A left-wing coalition is on course to win the most seats in France’s legislative elections, a surprise blow to far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who had hoped to form the next government.

The New Popular Front, which brings together the Socialists and France Insoumise (far left), could obtain between 172 and 210 seats in the National Assembly, according to the first projections of five polling institutes. This is still far from the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority in the lower house, which has 577 seats.
