First tearful radio message for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes after Silverstone joy

Lewis Hamilton was emotional in his first words over team radio after winning the F1 British Grand Prix.

Hamilton won for the ninth time at Silverstone, his final home race with Mercedes before joining Ferrari next year.

Moments after crossing the finish line, his emotion was evident.

Hamilton received a delirious radio message from his team: “Get in there, Lewis! You’re the man, you’re the man! Oh mate, I’ve been waiting for this…”

Hamilton responded, fighting back tears: “Thank you so much, guys. It means a lot. A lot to get this title. A big thank you to the fans here, I love you guys.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff told Hamilton: “We will win. We never give up.”

“What a conclusion to our journey together here at the British Grand Prix. We couldn’t have hoped for better.”

Hamilton’s race engineer Peter Bonington told him: “It means a lot to all of us.”

Hamilton said: “I love you Bono.”

Hamilton was still holding back tears as he was interviewed by his former team-mate Jenson Button in parc ferme.

Hamilton told Button: “Since 2021, I get up every day to fight, to train, to put in the work and work as hard as I can with this incredible team.

“This is my last race here at the British Grand Prix with this team. I wanted to win it for them because I love them, I appreciate them.

“I will be forever grateful to everyone on this team for all the work they have done over the years. And to the incredible fans, I could see you round by round.
