French Election Results: Left-Wing Coalition Wins Majority of Seats in Total Surprise

French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Ensemble alliance is set to lose its ruling majority, but voters shocked pollsters by rejecting Marine Le Pen’s right-wing National Rally.

Although final results are not expected until Sunday evening, it appears that the power struggle is set to be fierce between the country’s left and right wings and the president’s centrists. The National Rally has significantly improved its position in parliament, increasing the number of seats it holds, but it has not achieved the results it had hoped for.

The leader of the far-left party, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, said the results were a “huge relief for a majority of people in our country”.

According to IFOP estimates, Mélenchon’s left-wing alliance would win between 180 and 215 seats. Macron’s coalition would win around 150 to 180 and the National Rally between 120 and 150 seats out of the 577 seats in Parliament. Policy.

The surprising result comes after the National Rally won the first round a week ago. In the absence of a clear majority coalition, the National Assembly will likely have to reach an agreement between the main coalition leaders in the coming weeks to form a government.
