French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced today that he would present his resignation tomorrow after Sunday’s elections but that he was prepared to lead the executive on a provisional basis in the face of parliamentary deadlock and the proximity of the Olympic Games.

Attal welcomed the fact that Marine Le Pen’s far-right party did not win an absolute majority and said that “our country is facing an unprecedented political situation and is preparing to welcome the world in a few weeks,” referring to the Paris Olympics which begin on the 26th.

“I will therefore obviously assume my functions for as long as duty requires,” he added in an official statement after the seat projections for the new National Assembly, in which the Macronist bloc is second after the New Popular Front (NFP) on the left.

Attal called the political groups “responsible” because in the new political map “the extremes cannot push for an absolute majority” in the Assembly, “we will always refuse to submit to the extremes, we do not want everyone to fight alone.”

On January 9, Attal succeeded Élisabeth Borne. At 34, he became the youngest head of government of the Fifth Republic, succeeding Laurent Fabius, appointed in 1984 at the age of 37.
