During John Dramani Mahama’s meeting with the Ghanaian media on Sunday, July 7, 2024, Onua TV morning show host, Godsbrain Captain Smart, called for refreshing and innovative ideas that would persuade Ghanaians to embrace his message.

In the question and answer section of the show, Captain Smart noted that the promises made by the former president do not represent a significant departure from those made by previous Ghanaian leaders, which led to the current state of the country.

Captain Smart therefore demanded that John Mahama convince him and the Ghanaian people of a new message that would address the urgent needs of the country.

“In this Fourth Republic, we have seen Rawlings, Kufuor, Professor Mills, you (referring to Mahama) and Akufo-Addo, and it seems we are not hearing anything new that would motivate us to follow you. It is the same old story repeating itself. What new message do you have in your second attempt to stimulate our interest in your campaign and win our support?” he asked.

Responding to questions from Captain Smart and other members of the media present at the event, John Mahama outlined several promises that he said would help address the challenges facing the country.

One such promise is the 24-hour economic policy, which John Mahama says could be a game changer in solving Ghana’s economic woes.

“First of all, we must consider the 24-hour economy as an accelerator, the best accelerator or catalyst we can have. A 24-hour economy will increase the production and distribution of goods and services and accelerate economic exchanges between people and businesses. Through this, we will start growing at an unprecedented rate while providing decent jobs for young people,” he said.

“I’ve said that leadership is about vision, and I stand by that. But leadership is also about caring, about offering real, solid hope to people. That’s what a 24-hour economy is really about,” he continued.

“Let me explain in more detail. The 24-hour economy is an effective way of replacing imports with locally produced goods, thereby creating a solid base for a vibrant Ghanaian industry. Often, we do not import goods because they are superior to ours; we import them because no one produces them here in Ghana, or because there is insufficient local production.

“The stimulus package for companies that want to participate in the 24-hour economy will convince companies, I am sure, to start producing import substitutes. Do you know why? Because the market for these products already exists. Thanks to the 24-hour economy, companies will be incentivized to produce for this market. This is the easiest way to start growing sustainably,” he explained.

John Mahama also vowed to fight corruption and expand the country’s digitalization efforts to create more opportunities for Ghanaian youth.
