In partnership with Robert Bosch LLC, the Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce annually awards two $1,000 renewable graduate student scholarships and one $500 technical scholarship in Dorchester County. Bosch, a leading industry in the region, has been a significant community presence for 50 years.

This year, there were 24 STEM applications and four technical applications.

On June 18, at the Chamber Board of Directors meeting, Melissa Wright, chair of the Education and Workforce Development Division and member of the Scholarship Committee, announced this year’s scholarship recipients.

The $1,000 renewable scholarships are awarded to Jacob Zahn and Krystal Judy.

Zahn, an honors graduate of Summerville High School, will study molecular biology in the Honors College at the University of South Carolina. He earned an associate degree from Trident Technical College. He remained on the dean’s list while working part-time at Chick-fil-A. He graduated high school with an impressive 5.294 GPA and was ranked No. 6 out of 681 students.

Judy, a native of Reevesville, is a graduate of Dorchester Academy and will major in nursing at the University of South Carolina. Judy has received numerous honors, including an academic letter for maintaining a 4.7 GPA during her junior and senior years. She was also a member of the North/South All-Star team in basketball and the All-Region teams in softball and volleyball. She enjoys volunteering and spent this past summer volunteering at Camp Woodie. This past January, she coordinated a Red Cross blood drive and collected the largest blood donations to date.

The $500 technical scholarship was awarded to Emily Marchant of Woodland High School. Marchant will major in veterinary technology at Tri-County Technical College. She received a veterinary assistant certification from the Dorchester County Career and Technology Center. She won the Student of the Quarter award at the Career School.

Marchant participated in many extracurricular activities, including Future Farmers of America (FFA), softball and soccer. She worked as a work-study student for Santee Veterinary Clinic and spent many hours caring for animals.
