Dr Yunus seeks quashing of indictment order

Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday filed a review petition in the High Court seeking quashing of the assessment order by a Dhaka court in a case of misappropriation of Tk 25.22 crore from Grameen Telecom workers’ welfare fund against him and 13 others.

Advocate Abdullah-Al-Mamun filed the petition on behalf of Dr Yunus with the relevant branch of the High Court.

Lawyer Mamun said his clients had not committed any crime of money laundering or embezzlement. The accusations in the embezzlement case were unreasonably formulated, he added.

The petition will soon be heard by the High Court bench of Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ibadat Hossain, he added.

Earlier on June 12, Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of Dhaka Special Court-4 ordered to frame charges against 14 people, including Dr Yunus, for embezzling around Tk 25.22 crore from Grameen Telecom’s welfare fund.

July 15 has been set for the hearing on the formulation of the charges.

The 13 other accused in the case are Grameen Telecom Managing Director Nazmul Islam, Director Ashraful Hasan, former Managing Director Parveen Mahmood, Director Najnin Sultana, Shahjahan, Noorjahan Begum and SM Hazzatul Islam Latifi, all as directors, as well as Advocate Yusuf Ali, Advocate Zaforul Hasan Sharif, Gramin Telecom Employees Union President Mo. Kamruzzaman, Firoz Mahmud Hasan, General Secretary Kamrul Hasan, Office Secretary of the Employees Union and Representative Mainul Islam.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on May 30 last year.
