Fratelli Cosulich orders up to four methanol-ready bunkering vessels

Italian owner Fratelli Cosulich has signed a contract to purchase four methanol refuelling tankers for the transport of chemicals from Taizhou Maple Leaf Shipbuilding in China.

The agreement covers two IMO Type 2 bunker vessels with a capacity of 7,999 dwt, with options for two additional units. The vessels have been designed to carry a variety of cargoes, including fuel oil, biofuels and methanol.

The company has diversified its bunkering fleet as part of its multi-fuel vision, with two small-scale LNG bunkering vessels already in service and the recent delivery of its first bunkering vessel capable of delivering biofuel and methanol.

In January, Fratelli Cosulich also ordered its first dual-fuel methanol chemical tanker, backed by a charter from commodities trader Trafigura and the John Fredriksen Companies’ TFG Marine joint venture, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025.

Delivery of the first new model of the latest series is scheduled for the first half of 2026.

“This investment marks a further step in the Group’s commitment to a sustainable and efficient maritime industry and increased operational excellence of the fleet. Our investment in alternative fuels not only meets regulatory requirements, but also illustrates industry leadership,” said Fratelli Cosulich.
