“Guns.com” sent me a thoughtful email on the morning of July 4th, wishing me a safe and relaxing Independence Day, and offering free shipping on any guns I purchase.

No one else has emailed me to wish me a safe and relaxing Independence Day.

Of course, since it was an election year, some political candidates had emailed me that morning… asking for campaign contributions… and promising better government. But no free shipping.

Nor did the candidates propose discounts of up to $1,600. Or any discounts.

Guns.com’s discounts started at $180. If politicians were offering those kinds of savings, maybe they’d pique my interest.

I guess there is nothing more relaxing on a holiday like the 4th of July than ordering a new gun. It makes a person feel safe. Especially if the gun holds 30 rounds.

Or… place an order for several new weapons. Why not treat yourself? The more the merrier. With great prices and free shipping.

But despite the temptation, I did not order a new weapon on Independence Day.

The fact is, I never bought a gun. When I was 12, my grandfather gave me his old 20-gauge shotgun, but I never fired it and have no idea what happened to it after I left for college. I guess I always thought I was immune to violence and could live a safe, quiet life without the need to own a gun. Who would want to hurt a journalist?

It turned out that my Independence Day was really relaxing. And safe. I skipped the downtown parade, after hearing that the honor guard would be carrying rifles.

I also stayed away from downtown after the parade.

Prevention is better than cure, my father used to say.

There are too many people. Most of them are strangers, from who knows where. Some of them may have been carrying a gun. Some states are now making it easier to get a concealed carry permit. At least that’s what I’ve heard.

For the same general reason, I skipped the fireworks. What if one of those rockets had misbehaved…?

As the folks at Guns.com suggested: Independence Day should be safe and relaxing. It’s hard to relax if you don’t feel safe. And likewise, it’s hard to feel safe if you don’t feel relaxed. They kind of go hand in hand.

Of course, I hope the folks at Guns.com didn’t send this same email to anyone who would use these discounted firearms to commit crimes. That wouldn’t be nice.

Of course, Guns.com does a thorough background check on a person before offering free shipping?

Like me, for example. A harmless journalist who doesn’t even trust fireworks.

I just want to be safe and relaxed.
