Target asks customers to leave their checkbooks at home.

From July 15, the retail giant will no longer accept personal checks, USA Today reports.

Target, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday morning, said very few people were paying by check at its stores.

“Due to extremely low volumes, we will no longer accept personal checks starting July 15,” he told USA Today. “We have taken several steps to notify customers in advance to make the payment experience easier and more efficient.”

Target also accepts other payment methods, including cash, digital wallets, SNAP/EBT and credit and debit cards. Customers can also use deferred payment services, the company said.

People with a Target Circle card will still be able to pay their balance by sending checks to Target.

It’s not just Target that’s seeing a decline in personal check payments. The Federal Reserve’s financial services department reported that personal checks will only represent 3% of payments made in 2023, compared to 7% in 2020.

Credit and debit cards remain the most widely used forms of payment in the United States, followed by cash.

Target’s move comes as retailers increasingly turn away from cash and personal checks, with many refusing to accept them.
