“I do not accept the conclusions”

Darleen Tana says an independent Green Party report “significantly misrepresents” her involvement in her husband’s business and that the party had a “predetermined” view on the matter.

The Green Party today announced it has received the final independent report into allegations about Tana’s conduct in light of allegations of migrant exploitation surrounding her husband’s business.

The complaints were brought before the Labour Relations Authority.

Greens co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick told a news conference today that the independent report had concluded Tana fell “very, very short” of expectations – not just of a Green MP but of an MP in general – and that the caucus had voted unanimously to ask Tana to resign from Parliament on Saturday.

Tana had presented her views to her fellow Green MPs that day.

Tana resigned from the Green Party.

In her statement today, Tana said she did not feel “natural justice was served during this process.”

“At Saturday’s meeting it seemed clear that a predetermined opinion had been formed before I spoke. I can confirm, as I indicated at today’s conference with the Green Party leadership, that I have subsequently resigned as a member of the Green Party.

“I want to make it clear that I do not accept the conclusions of the report and believe that it significantly misrepresents the level of my involvement in my husband’s business.

“This was an investigation into what I knew and should have disclosed to my party leadership. So I am deeply concerned by the party’s summary of findings. The report does not say that there was exploitation of migrants, let alone that I was responsible for it in any way.”

She said she had only had “a short time” to review the report and was taking time to consider it before making further comments.
