Driver caught ‘drifting’ at car meet banned

A 26-year-old man has been banned from driving for 18 months after being caught driving dangerously at two ‘car rallies’.

On July 1 last year, Jaymie Currie, of Fletton, Peterborough, was filmed “skidding” at high speed around a roundabout in a black BMW on John Wesley Road, Werrington.

He was given a warning under section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2022, meaning his car could be seized and further action taken if he was involved in anti-social behaviour again.

Two months later, on September 2, police were called to a road where cars were crossing in Waterworth Road, Alwalton, near Peterborough. Currie was identified on video as he drifted into another car, and the vehicle was seized.

The silver BMW was examined and several major faults were identified, rendering it unusable, unsafe to drive and in such poor condition that it would not have passed an MOT.

In an interview, Currie, of Earls Court, Fletton, admitted driving the silver BMW and changing its wheels, but claimed he was unaware of the other faults.

He appeared in Peterborough Magistrates Court on June 28, where he admitted a charge of dangerous driving. He was disqualified for 18 months and had to retake a longer test before his licence could be reinstated.

He was also ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activity and 140 hours of unpaid work.

Police were called to the Alwalton car rally in September after a pedestrian was hit by a purple Mazda and suffered serious head and leg injuries.

Albert Hall, 22, of Stanwick, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, was arrested and charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He admitted the offence and is due to be sentenced on August 12 at Cambridge Crown Court.

Police Officer James Goose said: “Currie showed a blatant disregard for other road users by driving in a dangerous and anti-social manner and he is very fortunate that there was no collision, which could have been fatal to bystanders, himself or other road users.

“Vehicle collisions have been a problem in Peterborough for some time and it is something that the Road Policing Unit, in conjunction with other services such as Community Policing, is tackling.”
