Luke Shaw ‘fit and ready’ to face Netherlands in Euro 2024 semi-final

Luke Shaw has said he is fit to start England’s Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

The Manchester United left-back has been drafted into Gareth Southgate’s European Championship squad despite not having played a competitive game since February due to a hamstring injury.

Shaw made his first appearance at Euro 2024 in England’s quarter-final against Switzerland, coming on as a second-half substitute but suddenly feeling ready to play the full 90 minutes.

The 28-year-old has revealed that a recent training setback has left him fearing his tournament is over before it has even started. It is not the kind of update that will please United fans, who believe Shaw is in danger by playing at Euro 2024.

“Of course, I think I’m (fit and ready to play 90 minutes),” Shaw said, as quoted by BBC Sport. “It’s Gareth’s decision. I feel fit and ready to go.”

The left-back added: “The last four months have been very difficult. At first, I was expected to come back much sooner, but I have had many setbacks.

“It was really nice to come up the other night and have a few minutes – I really wanted it.

“I think before the team was announced we were planning to come back around the second or third game but unfortunately things didn’t go as planned and I was pushed back a game or two.

“Of course it’s tough. They’ve really been there for me, not just Gareth and Steve (Holland, England assistant manager) but the medical staff as well. I have to thank them a lot.”

Shaw is likely to start against the Netherlands as he is England’s only specialist left-back.

Shaw made just 15 appearances for United last season due to injuries. As our main left-back, we need him to be fully fit next season.
