“The number one cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. That’s why we want to teach you how to stop the bleeding,” the firefighters said.

The class is scheduled for Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tolland Fire Department Training Center, 191 Merrow Road.

Pre-registration is required to ensure availability of adequate supplies.

“Stop the Bleed” is a national campaign designed to give ordinary citizens without medical training the tools to recognize and respond to life-threatening bleeding while trained professionals are on the way.

Participants will learn three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds to death:

  1. How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound;
  2. How to dress a wound to control bleeding;
  3. How to properly apply a tourniquet.
