Beaverton Police Recover Rare Sports Cards Stolen During MAX Check

PORTLAND, Oregon (KOIN) – A Beaverton woman was arrested Monday with the help of Facebook Marketplace after a backpack containing sports cards and jewelry was stolen during a MAX stop Sunday, according to the Beaverton Police Department.

The arrest stems from an incident Sunday when the victim was traveling on a MAX train from Portland International Airport to Hillsboro when he accidentally dropped his backpack while getting off at the Beaverton Transit Center, authorities said.

Security footage showed that within seconds, a woman — identified as Dawn Castro, 34, of Beaverton — retrieved the backpack, which contained valuable jewelry and rare cards, including Mickey Mantle, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Barry Sanders and Kobe Bryant, the BPD said. The Mantle card alone is worth $5,000.

The victim reported the theft to Beaverton police, who found the stolen memorabilia on Facebook Marketplace.

Around noon Monday, detectives arrested Castro at the Beaverton Transit Center after he arranged a meeting to purchase the stolen cards. Detectives recovered all of the victim’s cards and found the stolen jewelry at a local pawn shop.

Due to the significant value of the stolen property, authorities said Castro was charged with first-degree aggravated robbery.
