Siaya Governor James Orengo has issued a stern warning to the government over the alarming trend of kidnappings and extrajudicial killings.

In a statement on his X account on July 8, 2024, Orengo vowed that Kenyans would not remain silent in the face of such grave injustices as abductions, enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests.

Furthermore, the new governor described extrajudicial killings and arbitrary arrests as hallmarks of a repressive state.

He also urged the current government to understand the importance of respecting the Bill of Rights and ensuring that security agencies operate within the bounds of the law.

He further expressed disappointment at the persistence of such violations despite the protections enshrined in the 2010 Constitution.

“Kidnappings, forced disappearances, arbitrary arrests and prosecutions, and extrajudicial executions are characteristics of a repressive state. The security organs are obliged to respect the Bill of Rights. No one would have believed that these crimes against the people could be committed after the 2010 Constitution. There will be no silence,” he said.

Orengo asks Ruto to resign

Over the past month, Kenyan youth have taken to the streets to demand the rejection of the 2024 Finance Bill.

Due to President William Ruto’s late response to their request, other issues were raised by citizens who compiled a list of demands they wanted the government to address and added his resignation as one of them.

Similarly, recently, the governor supported Generation Z in its call for government accountability.

The governor asked tough questions of Kenya’s Kwanza government and publicly joined Generation Z in calling for President William Ruto to resign.

On 1 July 2024, Orengo made a public appeal to Ruto to resign. He argued that public anger against the Kenya Kwanza government was too great.

According to Orengo, if Ruto listened to the mood of the Kenyan people, he would resign because Kenyans were fed up with his administration.

“Talking to him (Ruto) will not solve anything; there is too much anger against the Kwanza government in Kenya. If he is truly a Christian, he should just resign from that government,” Orengo added.
