ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For the second time in franchise history, New Mexico United will play in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup when they take on MLS side LAFC on Wednesday night. The round of 16 is the furthest United has ever reached in franchise history, but they are confident they can break that record this time around.

Unlike last season, in 2019, United played well enough to lead the Western Conference of the USL Championship. The team has more talent than in years past. “They all know what they’re looking for,” United second-year coach Eric Quill said. “We had our preseason goals. This is one of them. They earned the right to be here, which I’m proud of. And these guys are playing as well as anybody and I think our football, our mindset, our cohesion is something special and I think that’s going to bode well for us tonight.”

New Mexico United’s success has been away and at home this season, where they maintain a perfect 7-0 record. They travel for Wednesday’s Open Cup match, but appear ready for the challenge whether the game is home or away. “I think one of the biggest things that this staff has infiltrated into the club is a winning culture, a desire and a deep will to win, whether it’s in training, whether it’s in friendlies or the Open Cup, a real emphasis and desire to win in everything you do,” said NM United midfielder Daniel Bruce. United and LAFC kick off Wednesday at 9 p.m. MT.
