Nag Ashwin Reveals These Two Hollywood Blockbuster Movies Inspired By Kalki 2898 AD

Filmmaker Nag Ashwin recently revealed that while creating his sci-fi film Kalki 2898 ADhe was inspired by two Hollywood blockbuster films. In a recent interview, he was asked if Marvel’s Iron Man franchise was an inspiration for the film, to which he replied “I would say Guardians of the Galaxy had more influence.”

Movies that inspired Kalki 2898 AD

Nag said in a Zoom interview, “We grew up watching Marvel movies. I would say Guardians of the Galaxy influenced me more than Iron Man. Star Wars is definitely a huge influence. I love Star Wars, so it’s subconsciously part of my aesthetic.”

There were rumours that Kamal Haasan’s look was inspired by Harry Potter’s Voldemort. Rubbishing these speculations, he said: “Our references were these old Tibetan monks, who are supposed to be 120 to 130 years old. Sir (Kamal Haasan) would always mention the picture of Dorian Gray (from Oscar Wilde’s 1890 philosophical novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray). That was the inspiration for the sir. We didn’t have a lot of cinematic references for that old look,” Nag added.

He said the only possible allusion to Harry Potter would be to Vinay Kumar’s character Sirius, who is derived from the well-known Harry Potter character Sirius Black (Gary Oldman in the films).

The overall distribution of Kalki 2898 AD is led by actors Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan.

Kalki 2898 AD plot

Inspired by Hindu scriptures, this is the first film in the Kalki Cinematic Universe. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 A.D., the film focuses on a small group of people who are sent on a quest to save Kalki, the unborn child of test subject SUM-80.

Kalki 2898 AD is currently playing in cinemas and is making waves at the Indian and international box office.
