Niverville burglary suspect arrested after fleeing on ATV

KINDERHOOK — Police charged a Columbia County man with 10 felonies Tuesday after a lengthy chase in the town of Kinderhook.

The 35-year-old Stuyvesant man fled from a Columbia County sheriff’s deputy in an all-terrain vehicle around 8 a.m. in the town of Kinderhook, according to state police. It was unclear whether he was already wanted by police at the time, and state police were not immediately available for comment.

State police, including aviation units, joined the pursuit later Tuesday, searching for the man for hours in the Kinderhook area. State police Troop K spokesman AJ Hicks said early Wednesday that the suspect was arrested overnight and was still being processed Wednesday morning.

State police have accused the man of being connected to “several” burglaries in the area, and he faces 17 charges, including criminal possession of a weapon, though state police said he was unarmed during Tuesday’s pursuit and was not considered a danger to the public.

The charges include residential burglary, a weapons charge, reckless endangerment, two counts of robbery, fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs and criminal mischief.

Additional charges are pending, according to state police.

The man was arraigned in Kinderhook Town Court and remanded in custody at the Columba County Jail with bail set at $75,000 cash or $100,000 surety. He is scheduled to appear in town court on July 16.
