Free Skin Cancer Screenings Offered at Rhode Island Beaches

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As the scorching days of summer approach, health experts are urging Rhode Islanders to take steps to protect themselves from skin cancer.

Besides applying sunscreen and seeking shade, getting screened for skin cancer is one of the most important steps people can take. That’s why the Rhode Island Department of Health is once again partnering with Brown Dermatology to offer skin exams.

Starting Friday, screenings will be available for free at Rhode Island beaches through mid-August.

According to Dr. John C. Kawaoka of Brown Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their lives.

“Everyone is in danger,” Kawaoka said.

No matter how much time you spend in the sun, health officials say prevention and early detection are the two ways to stay safe.

Preventive measures include applying sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible.

Early detection involves monitoring skin spots and moles over time and having regular checkups.

“Doing a skin exam is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself against skin cancer,” Rhode Island Health Director Jerry Larkin, MD, said in a news release.

“Skin cancer can affect people of all skin colors and complexions, which is why all Rhode Islanders should take advantage of these free, convenient skin cancer screenings,” Larkin continued. “Cancer screenings have the power to save lives.”

The first 100 people who show up at each of the upcoming events will receive a private screening. Those requiring follow-up will be referred for an additional dermatology consultation.

Participants are requested to wear swimsuits or clothing that can be easily removed.
