  • Both candidates have struggled to attract black voters heading into 2024
  • A Daily Show correspondent asked a group of six voters who they preferred
  • “Yeah, I didn’t see that coming,” comedian Josh Johnson said of the results

A Daily Show segment may not have gone as planned when they held a focus group of black voters and half of them revealed they were willing to vote for Donald Trump.

An Ipsos poll in late June, just after the disastrous debate between Joe Biden and Trump in Atlanta, suggested that his support among African Americans had fallen 20 points compared to 2020.

The segment on the venerable liberal comedy show seemed to prove it, as correspondent Josh Johnson rounded up a half-dozen black voters to talk about their reaction to the debate.

Johnson began the segment, titled “Are We Gonna Give a F*ck About Trump?” by asking the six people — three men and three women — who they would vote for.

Three of them said Trump, although one expressed some reservations, leaving Johnson shocked.

“Okay, we’re tied, which – yeah, I didn’t see that coming,” he said, as the audience laughed.

One survey respondent said, when asked who he would vote for: “Should I say his name? I don’t want to, but it’s more than likely Trump.”

However, the other two Trump voters in the group seemed much more comfortable, as did the three Biden voters.

“I’ve always been a Democrat, and most of the time the Democratic Party always makes a bunch of promises that they can’t keep,” said the male voter, who wouldn’t give Trump’s name.

He and one of the two women who voted for Trump believed there would be a shift in the black community toward the Republican candidate, again blaming Democrats.

“You know, they use the problems of the African-American community as a strong argument to make promises to us just to get us to vote, and then once we vote and everyone is in place, we wonder, ‘What happened?’

They said they were upset about Biden’s past comments about the black community, including an interview with radio host Charlamagne the God where he proclaimed: “If you have a hard time figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you’re not black.”

“They both said some questionable and nasty things, but when you start looking at the facts, it’s like Biden, you dropped the ball, bro,” one voter said.

Recent polls show that while Trump remains widely unpopular with black voters, he has made gains since leaving office.

Johnson began the segment, titled “Are We Gonna Fuck Trump?” by asking the six people — three men and three women — who they would vote for. Three of them said Trump, though one expressed reservations, leaving Johnson shocked.

Two June polls conducted by AP-NORC shows that about 7 in 10 black Americans have a somewhat or very unfavorable opinion of Trump.

Although that figure has not yet been reached, Trump only received 8% of the black vote in the last election.

President Joe Biden’s popularity among Black and Hispanic Americans has also declined since 2021.

Young black Americans may be a little more receptive to Trump’s arguments. About a third of young black adults — those under 45 — view him positively, compared with about 1 in 10 black adults 45 or older. But most young black adults view him negatively.

Meanwhile, about 6 in 10 black Americans have a positive view of Biden, up from 8 in 10 when he took office.
