Aaron Rodgers ready to return to work for Jets after ‘magnificent’ trip to Egypt

Aaron Rodgers ready to return to work for Jets after ‘magnificent’ trip to Egypt

Perhaps the first song to come over the loudspeakers at Jets training camp will be “Walk Like an Egyptian.”

Aaron Rodgers, who is returning from a season-ending torn Achilles tendon, confirmed reports Friday that he was in Egypt when he missed mandatory minicamp in June after participating in all voluntary OTAs.

He’ll be back in Florham Park, New Jersey, when the Jets’ veterans report to training camp on July 23.

“I’ve felt good all spring,” Rodgers told NBC Sports while playing in the American Century Championship golf tournament. “I had a good OTA. I had a great trip to Egypt. And this is like the final milestone — summer ends Sunday. Walking down to the 18th hole is a bittersweet feeling, but it’s fun to be here.”

The Jets were aware of Rodgers’ long-standing plans to travel to Egypt but called his absence “unjustified” and therefore subject to fines because it would set a bad example to exempt a star from a mandatory camp over a non-urgent matter.

The practice format for OTAs and spring minicamp is essentially the same.

Rodgers, 40, played just four snaps for the Jets last season, cutting short a Super Bowl hype train that is slowly picking up steam as he returns to a roster loaded with top-tier talent.

“My Achilles is good,” Rodgers said. “I felt really good at the end of last year. Then there’s always a plateau. It’s just getting back into it.”

Jets fans are hoping Rodgers’ return to the football field after surgery will be as smooth as his return to the golf course.

“In my first round, I was fortunate enough to make an ace on 17 at Shadow Creek,” Rodgers said, referring to a Las Vegas golf course. “That was the highlight of my off-season golf season.”

Rodgers will only become the 10th the quarterback in NFL history to throw a pass in his age-41 season if he stays healthy through the summer.
