Fans Give Tips for Showering at Outdoor Music Festivals

Online fans are giving tips for showering at outdoor music festivals.

It’s festival season, and while camping out for days to see your favorite musicians perform is a great way to spend time outdoors, it can be difficult to maintain good hygiene.

And for the sake of everyone around you, you should definitely try to do it. Almost everyone sweats at outdoor concerts, but sitting in that sweat for days on end is pretty heinous.

Luckily, if you’re not staying in a hotel and heading to the festival grounds, many outdoor areas have shower facilities for those camping. If you’ve never used one before, it can be a little confusing.

But festival insiders on Reddit have offered some tips for staying clean and feeling fresh for days. We’ve compiled a list of tips based on what people have said on various Reddit threads. Read on to see what some of them have suggested.

Use them in the afternoon or late evening

Some festivals have individual showers and others have communal showers. Regardless of which type of shower you use, you will likely have to wait in line if you go at certain times, especially in the morning.

A few Redditors have suggested using them at night, and others have noted that if you’re willing to miss some performances, there will likely be less of a wait during peak festival times.

Wear a swimsuit if you are not comfortable

If you don’t like the idea of stripping down in front of other festival-goers to use the communal showers, a swimsuit is a great idea. Some showers are divided by gender, others are not.

“Join the free mixed festival for all with no queues! Nobody is watching, this is Europe,” someone wrote in a post on Hellfest’s Reddit.

“That’s exactly it,” another person agreed. “I never bothered to queue for the individual showers and always opted for the outdoor communal shower. Some people wear swimsuits because they don’t feel comfortable being naked in front of people, others are naked, but I never felt unsafe or stared at (as a woman).”

Wash in your tent if you don’t want to use the communal showers

If you don’t want to use communal showers at all, or if the festival you’re attending doesn’t have them or restricts access to them, you can bring shower equipment with you that is easy to store and use in your tent.

“Full body wash in the tent. No wasting valuable time queuing for a shower,” wrote one person in a Glastonbury Festival Reddit thread.

Some recommend collapsible buckets that you can fill in sinks. There are also cheap camping showers you can buy, which are basically rubber bags that hold water and come with a hose that connects to it. If you fill it up early and let it sit in the sun, the water will warm up and you can then have a friend hold it for you while you bathe.

There are also pop-up showers and other tools you can use. Or just use a large water bottle.

“The best thing to do is to take a 2 liter bottle of Evian and do a cold bath in your tent every morning. The sequence is: water on your head and body, rub in, lather up with shampoo/shower gel, rinse one, rinse two, towel dry. It will be a pain, but it will wake you up and you will have saved 30-45 minutes of your day by not having to go to the showers,” another person added in the thread.

Wear sandals

Unless you’re worried about getting your feet dirty again when you get back to camp, wear something on your feet. Most sandals allow you to clean your feet without even taking them off.

Using body wipes

If you don’t feel like showering, you can pack body wipes. They may not offer the same level of hygiene as a shower, but they’re definitely better than nothing, and you can even keep them in your bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day.
