Jalil Hackett set for intense fight against Peter Dobson

Jalil Hackett set for intense fight against Peter Dobson

Undefeated welterweight prospect Jalil “Major” Hackett is eager to take his career to the next level. On Saturday night, July 13, he will take a major competitive step forward when he takes on Peter Dobson (16-1, 9 KOs) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a fight that will be broadcast live worldwide on DAZN.

The Hackett-Dobson fight is on the pre-card of the Jaron “Boots” Ennis vs. David Avanesyan event. Hackett is looking to make a statement against Dobson and if he succeeds, he will earn a quality win and the WBA Continental Americas title.
Washington DC native Jalil Hackett posted an amateur record of 140-19.

Hackett officially turned amateur to professional in March 2021 when he signed with Mayweather Promotions.

Hackett had a nice promotional banner attached to his name, but only fought eight times in three years. The last time Jalil Hackett competed inside the squared circle, he faced Adrian Gutierrez in December 2023 as part of the Boxfest 6 co-featured bout.

As the first round drew to a close, Hackett threw a big left hook that sent Gutierrez stumbling back into his corner. Hackett knocked Gutierrez to the canvas in the third round, and after Gutierrez got back up, Hackett unleashed a flurry of punches that forced the referee to step in and stop the fight.

A few months later, Jalil Hackett made a pivotal career decision by deciding to leave Mayweather Promotions and become a free agent. Hackett was active in 2023, but most of his fights were fights he had to make himself.

Hackett was on the market for a short time before deciding to sign with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. Now, 21-year-old Jalil Hackett (8-0, 7 KOs) is set to make his Matchroom debut in a next-level fight against a tough, seasoned veteran.

In September 2014, Peter Dobson made his professional debut and earned a unanimous decision victory over Mack Babb. The Bronx, New York native won his next fifteen fights.

On February 3, 2024, Peter Dobson stepped into the ring to face welterweight contender Conor Benn. Dobson was very competitive, but Benn was too fast and too accurate, and the British welterweight won by unanimous decision.

Peter “Pistol Pete” Dobson now wants to play the role of party pooper by changing the trajectory of Jalil Hackett’s career. Young prospect Jalil Hackett believes he can knock Dobson out, but on the other hand, Dobson’s goal is to dominate and force Jalil Hackett’s father/trainer to have no choice but to stop the fight.

After an exchange of words at the press conference, the confrontation between Hackett and Dobson became very intense. As the two fighters stood toe-to-toe, Jalil Hackett choked Peter Dobson, and Dobson responded by slapping Hackett in the face.

Peter Dobson realises he has been chosen to take part in the process but is ready to make the most of the opportunity. He believes Eddie Hearn and Matchroom made a mistake in choosing him as Jalil Hackett’s next opponent.

“It’s too early for him. In boxing, you move up, every fighter has to, like Sugar Ray Leonard. Maybe it’s his team chasing the money. I don’t know how they think he’s ready,” said Dobson, 34.

While his opponent doesn’t think he’s ready, Jalil Hackett feels confident that everything will go as planned. Despite Dobson’s incredible resistance, Hackett believes he can win the fight by knockout.

“He’s a very motivated fighter,” Hackett said. “I can guarantee this fight won’t go the distance. I’m both very anxious and very excited. This is a knockout I’ve been preparing for my whole life.”
