Mayor Eric Adams and DSNY Unveil New York City’s Official Trash Can, Announce New Container Rule for Fall 2024

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Mayor Eric Adams was joined by Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch Monday morning to unveil New York City’s first official trash can outside Gracie Mansion.

In addition to the new bins, officials announced that starting November 12, owners of residential buildings with one to nine units will be required to use bins with secure locking lids.

“Many homeowners already use trash cans for their trash and pay upwards of $100 to keep their streets clean,” Tisch said. “We have great news: Just as we prepare to require trash containers for all one- to nine-unit buildings, we are unveiling the official ‘New York City Trash Can,’ which is beautiful, durable and under $50 for the most common size.”

The city says the containers will keep streets cleaner by keeping black trash bags off the streets and help reduce the rat population.

“They’re getting bolder and bolder,” Adams said of the growing rodent problem. “They’re not running away from you anymore; they’re just hanging out with you and doing whatever they want. And we want to make sure that changes in a real way.”

As of November 12, city officials will have containerized 70 percent of New York City’s 14 billion pounds of annual waste in two years.

“Today we are throwing even more black bags into the dustbin of history and taking another step in our ‘waste revolution,’” Adams said.

Starting June 1, 2026, buildings will be required to use New York City’s official trash receptacle to facilitate faster, safer, and cleaner mechanized collection with rear-loading dump trucks.
