‘Proper Stoppage’ – UFC Fans Praise Cage Doctor After Sickening Cut Leads to Medical Intervention

MMA doctors aren’t always the most popular people at UFC events.

Medical professionals are always available to ensure fighters are cared for before, during and after their fights in the Octagon.

Sometimes this means doctors stepping in and calling off fights when they’re about to get interesting, mostly due to cuts, but sometimes due to other injuries.

Fans generally disagree with the doctor’s call and it is not uncommon to hear boos when they feel a fight has been stopped prematurely.

However, everyone agrees that Drew Dober should have been pulled from his last fight at UFC Denver on Saturday night.

The ever-entertaining lightweight was hit with a spinning elbow in the closing seconds of the second round, which opened up a massive cut above his right eye.

Dober was staggered and covered in blood, but was allowed to continue for the third round after being examined by the UFC doctor.

Just 88 seconds later, the situation was even worse and a timeout was called.

On this occasion, the doctor decided that Dober was unfit to continue and advised referee Herb Dean to call off the fight, which he immediately did.

Loud groans greeted the decision in the arena, but fans watching at home all agreed that Dober had to be pulled from the fight due to the severity of his cut.

One person tweeted: “Good decision. It looked horrible on TV.”

Another said: “It’s awful, he’s tough, but it’s a good save.”

A third person wrote: “This could have been even more horrible. A proper stop.”

Someone else added: “Had to call him but wow he was still in there fighting!”

Dober shared footage of his eyelid being stitched back together and a photo showing what he looked like once the process was complete.

He wrote on Instagram: “What an honor to be able to step up there and show my heart and determination.”

“Thank you to Denver and the UFC for these moments and opportunities. There is no shame in failure. It is just an opportunity to become a better man.”

Dober will probably feel a little worse the next morning.

The American and his opponent, Jean Silva, both earned $50,000 in bonuses for hosting the UFC Denver fight of the night.

That big check will surely soften the blow for Dober as he rests and recovers before his next fight.
