Gareth Southgate set to be offered new job as England future shrouded in uncertainty after Spain defeat

Gareth Southgate set to be offered new job as England future shrouded in uncertainty after Spain defeat

Gareth Southgate is set to be offered a punditry role amid uncertainty over his England future, according to reports.

The 53-year-old oversaw his side’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday, with the Three Lions saddened to have missed out on a first trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

Southgate indicated before the tournament that he would leave the England dugout if their quest for glory ended in failure.

He was linked with Manchester United earlier this summer, although the Red Devils have since opted to stick with Erik ten Hag.

Southgate is set to be offered a commentary role by ITV, according to the Daily Mail. The channel holds the former Middlesbrough star in “high regard” and would like to include him in its 2026 World Cup coverage.

As things stand, his contract with England is due to expire in December.

The FA are keen to keep Southgate in his job, believing he is the right man to finally end years of injury.

But with the 53-year-old facing intense pressure, it is unclear whether he will choose to sign a new contract or pursue a new adventure elsewhere.

Southgate and Roy Keane clashed during their playing careers. Keane works at ITV, as well as Sky Sports.

But given he has been positive about the England manager, their hitherto strained relationship should not pose a problem.

Keane, however, criticised England’s performance in their defeat to Spain.

The Irishman said the Three Lions had been “exposed”, having struggled their way into the final without ever playing at their best.

The 52-year-old said: “They haven’t been playing their best in the last few games, they’ve gotten away with it. In the end, they’ve been exposed.”

“The best team won tonight, the best team won the tournament. Their record over the last 12 months has been fantastic.

“Spain have a very good mix in the way they play. They have a threat on the counterattack, they have youth and experience.

“They beat Germany, they beat France and they beat England.”

Keane also praised Spain for their attitude and said England were “lacking quality” as their title hopes ended.

“Despite all the talent they have, I tell you, they work hard. They have desire, they have pride,” he continued.

“It’s the biggest step for players and a manager to win something. A lot of young English players have been fantastic in this tournament but they lacked quality.

“The fighting spirit, the desire and the choices coming off the bench probably got them to the final, but top-level sport is brutal. Sometimes the opponent is simply better than you.
