Martha Stewart Surprised by ‘Harsh’ Criticism of Her Living Room Renovation

The 82-year-old interior design specialist says her redesign project is far from over.

Martha Stewart knows by now that trying to appease Internet trolls is a tough task.

The 82-year-old TV host responded to recent backlash she received for one of her newly decorated Maine living rooms — which features yellow furniture and several large bird portraits — in an Instagram post on July 4.

“I rarely read all the comments that come in after I post, but because I was so happy with the transformation of my Maine living room, I went through many of the comments and was surprised at how harshly judged many were!!!,” Stewart wrote. “My Maine helpers and I spent three hours moving the old furniture and setting up the new furniture. #Wewere thrilled to see that the pieces actually fit the room and were proportionate to the large size of the space.”

The celebrity chef, decorating guru and businesswoman explained that the room refresh was an attempt to change the style of the space “quickly and efficiently” and that professional decorators were not involved in the design process.

Stewart also made it clear that the update is far from over. “Transforming a house, a home, or a room into a beautiful living space takes way more than three hours,” she explained. “Of course, there will be color, plants, mirrors, a new rug or two, and other art and objects. Stay tuned!!!”

She added: “And, by the way, the birds are chromolithographs by Carroll Tyson known as the ‘6Audubon of Maine’ — so beautiful!”

THE How to decorate The author showed off her living room’s new look in an Instagram post earlier this week after a “big day of rearranging furniture in the three main living rooms” of her home. “We swapped out the gray-blue upholstery for a creamy, pale butter yellow,” she wrote, noting that she loves “the rustic yet elegant charm of this lovely 1925 home.”

Her critics had a hard time understanding her vision for the space. In the comments section of the original post, one user wrote: “To be honest… you could hire a better decorator, do this in an English country style, and it would be so much more upscale and comfortable.”

Another person wrote: “Imagine living in a place where there are no family photos, nothing personal, a lack of color, a tired fireplace, blankets that no one will use. This is exactly how my husband’s mother-in-law lived in her penthouse in Naples. She would be 105 years old. Sorry Martha… You need color.”

A third commenter didn’t hesitate to write: “Yuck. Looks like the living room of a Marriott suite in 1987.”
