Gareth Southgate offered top new job if he resigns as England manager after heartbreaking Euro 2024 defeat

Gareth Southgate offered top new job if he resigns as England manager after heartbreaking Euro 2024 defeat

With Euro 2024 over, it may be time for England manager Gareth Southgate to assess his situation.

He first took on the role on an interim basis in 2016 and has been in charge of the Three Lions for almost eight years now.

During this period he led England in four tournaments, reaching two finals, one semi-final and one quarter-final.

Compare that to England’s previous four tournaments, where they were eliminated in the first knockout round three times and failed to even make it out of the group once.

In another tournament, England didn’t even qualify, so results in major competitions have certainly improved under Southgate.

However, it would be hard to deny that England have lit up Euro 2024 with the quality of their performances and many are wondering whether Southgate has perhaps taken this talented side as far as he could.

Furthermore, his current contract is due to expire in December this year and he has not made it clear that he intends to sign a new contract.

Declan Rice has said the squad would “love” for Southgate to sign a new contract and the FA appear keen for him to stay, but it is ultimately up to the man himself to decide whether he wants to stay or not.

After the Euro 2024 final where England were beaten 2-1 by Spain, Southgate said it was “not the time for me to discuss” his future and the possibility of staying on as manager.

He said: “I understand the question, of course, but I think I need to talk to the right people, and we’ll go from there.

“It was an incredible experience to lead the team to another final, but obviously to fail like we did right now is very painful.”

A few years ago the manager promised that he would “not overstay his welcome”, and there is merit in a man who recognises that he has gone as far as he can and chooses the right time to step away.

If he steps down as England manager, Southgate could be given a new role if he wishes.

According to the Daily Mail, ITV are keen to hire Southgate as a pundit if he decides not to renew his contract with the England team.

He would line up alongside players like Roy Keane to provide advice on international football, and in particular the England team.

Whether Southgate will want to take the job is another matter, it could complicate matters for the next England manager if his immediate predecessor is on TV and hired to discuss how things are going for them.

Ultimately, the manager said there were “a lot of things to consider” regarding his future.
