Ludvig Aberg shocked that there is no national holiday after golf pro LIV's feat

Ludvig Aberg thinks there should be a national holiday in his native Sweden to celebrate his compatriot Henrik Stenson winning the Open at Royal Troon in 2016.

Aberg, 24, made his feelings known ahead of his Open debut at the same venue this week.

When asked how inspired he was by Stenson carving his name into the famous Claret Jug eight years ago in Troon, Aberg considered it one of the coolest days in Swedish sporting history.

So much so that Aberg believes the now LIV Golf pro’s exploits should be commemorated in Sweden.

Stenson shot a final-round 63 to edge playing partner Phil Mickelson by three shots.

He finished the week with a score of 20 under par, which remains the lowest 72-hole score in Open history.

“I have said it many times before, this day should be a national holiday in Sweden,” Aberg said.

“It was a really cool day. I remember watching it with my friends, and it’s cool to see what he’s done for Swedish golf, and what he’s doing, so that was obviously the pinnacle of that.”

Aberg regrets misconduct that cost him Scottish Open

Aberg came close to capturing his second PGA Tour and DP World Tour title this weekend.

He took a two-shot lead heading into the final round of the Genesis Scottish Open.

Aberg blew it all with a mediocre 73 that left him T4 and four shots behind local favorite Bob MacIntyre.

The world number four has hinted at dangerous driving as the main cause of his crash on Sunday.

He said: “I would say I did a little bit better on Friday and Saturday, but the tendencies were still there. Kind of like going under it, behind it, turning it over, and it’s not a very nice place to hit drivers.”

Aberg reached a career-high fourth place in the world rankings

Aberg is playing in only his fourth major tournament this season.

He finished second in his major debut at the Masters in April, missed the cut at the US PGA in May and then finished T12 at the US Open last month.

Aberg only turned professional a little over a year ago.

It’s been a golden year for Aberg, who proved to be a thorn in the side of the U.S. Ryder Cup team last September in Rome.

Aberg has yet to fully appreciate his meteoric rise to prominence, but he plans to do so soon.
