Mets star Pete Alonso reiterates message about trade deadline and free agency

Pete Alonso has once again sent a clear message about his status with the New York Mets.

“I would love to stay and I don’t want to be traded,” Alonso told reporters at Tuesday’s All-Star Game news conference in Arlington, Texas. “I love (New York). It’s my home.”

The 29-year-old first baseman shared the same sentiment with MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo back in June. His opinion clearly hasn’t changed since that conversation.

At this point, it would likely take a massive overpay from a contender or a dramatic collapse by the Mets for president of baseball operations David Stearns to decide to trade Alonso before the July 30 deadline, with the team sitting in the third NL wild-card spot and a half-game out of second. They are also within striking distance of their injured NL East rival, the Atlanta Braves, for the top wild-card spot at 4.5 games back.

Even MLB insider Ken Rosenthal told FOX Sports on Tuesday that “(the Mets) are not trading Pete Alonso.”

The Mets are in the midst of a title race and it would send the wrong message to the team and fans if they were to part ways with their homegrown star in the next two weeks.

While Alonso will likely remain in Queens for the remainder of the season, the question will shift to his free agency, where the Mets will look to retain him.

Since entering the league in 2019, no hitter has hit more home runs (211) or driven in more runs (549) than Alonso during that span.

Time will tell if Alonso becomes a lifelong Met this offseason, but for now he has continued to stress that he wants to stay put.
