Meet Chris Schmid, Firefighter/Paramedic

Where are you parked?
I currently work at Station 1 (W. Dayton Street) on the “C” shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I had the opportunity to do a shadowing mission with the Madison Fire Department during my senior year of high school. I was impressed with the professionalism and quality of care provided by the team. The firefighters on duty that day made me feel very welcome and explained exactly what they were doing and why in a way that I understood at the time without having any prior experience. This opportunity solidified my desire to join the fire department after high school.

What do you love about Madison or enjoy doing that is unique to Madison?
Madison really has a lot to offer. There are always events and things to do throughout the city. My wife and I are looking forward to spending lots of time outdoors with our one-year-old son at farmers markets, the Henry Vilas Zoo, and many other fun activities this summer.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to join the MFD?
It is a very competitive process and it may take multiple applications, but don’t let that discourage you. Keep working to improve yourself every day and get involved in the community.
