Bridgeport Emergency Department Chief Nurse Sees Increase in Patients With Respiratory Problems

A head nurse at an emergency room in Bridgeport says she’s seen an increase in patients with breathing problems.

“Respiratory illnesses like COPD and asthma can sometimes have symptoms that can be significantly worsened by heat,” says Kelly Tenney, chief nursing officer in the emergency department at St. Vincent Medical Center.

Tenny encourages anyone experiencing symptoms related to breathing difficulties to go to the emergency room.

“It’s hot! We see that dehydration, nausea and vomiting can sometimes be heat-related,” Tenney added. “Very simple tasks can really make you feel miserable and tired overall. So you really have to listen to your body and remember when to ask for help.”

Tenny says the hospital is anticipating a high volume of emergency room visits and is prepared to handle any patients who come in.
