House of the Dragon viewers were left “heartbroken” after witnessing a poignant exchange between Aegon II Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, and his mother Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, in the latest episode of the HBO series.

In the fifth episode of season 2, the audience is treated to emotional scenes featuring the king, who is revealed to be alive but seriously injured.

After a cruel betrayal by his brother Aemond Targaryen, played by Ewan Mitchell, Aegon is shown barely alive, with terrible burns and scars covering his body.

Alicent is clearly wracked with guilt, as her harsh criticism of her son’s incompetence has driven him to go to war despite his lack of experience. Throughout the fifth episode, Alicent visits a barely conscious Aegon on several occasions.

However, one particularly touching scene sees Alicent leaving Aegon’s room as he manages to utter a single word. “Mother,” he says in a weak voice.
