MIT-educated neurosurgeon reveals shocking reason why he QUIT lucrative medical career after 20 years

  • Dr. Goobie underwent years of rigorous training to become a neurosurgeon
  • But after 20 years, he made the decision to leave the medical field.
  • The expert has now candidly revealed the real reason why he resigned

An MIT-educated neurosurgeon has candidly revealed the shocking reason he quit his job and left the medical field after 20 years.

Dr. Goobie underwent years of rigorous training, completed medical school and a six-year residency in neurosurgery before reaching the pinnacle of his career, which saw him perform multiple successful surgeries every day.

But after spending 10 years practicing and working to relieve patients of their suffering, the neurosurgeon said he gained 40 pounds due to stress and lack of sleep.

And while feelings of burnout assailed the MIT alumnus, the 38-year-old also couldn’t shake a nagging thought about greed.

In a 50-minute clip shared on his YouTube account, Dr. Goobie confessed that he realized that the medical system in the United States was not designed to “help heal” but rather so that “hospitals can make money.”

In this intimate video, the health expert spoke directly to viewers while in the mountains and shared the real reasons behind his decision to leave the medical field.

He explained: “I was a neurosurgeon. I went to MIT and did four years of medical school and six years of neurosurgery training. I was a neurosurgeon for almost 10 years after all that, which is 20 years of my life.”

“I quit last year and no one understood why I quit. People were asking me questions, but a decision like that involves 20 years of your life, you can’t really answer that question in a few minutes…

“I am making this video to help me sort out my own to think about all of this because there are many factors, but also to help someone else who is in a difficult situation.

“If they find themselves in a difficult situation like I was, maybe hearing my story will help them get through it.”

Despite a high salary and a respected role, he admitted: “Something was wrong, I was very unhappy. I have never been so unhappy and I could not understand for a long time.”

He explained that when he was a surgeon, he had performed several surgeries using advanced technologies, but had never been able to address the root cause of the disease.

“I was trying to help people, but these operations weren’t fixing the problem. Some people would feel better, some people would feel the same, some people would feel worse,” Dr. Goobie said.

In a 50-minute clip shared on his YouTube account, Dr. Goobie confessed that he realized that the medical system in the United States was not designed to “help heal” but rather so that “hospitals can make money.”

“I thought if I did a perfect operation, people would get better, but that wasn’t always the case… It really bothered me,” he explained.

And he soon began asking his patients more questions about their lives – which turned out to be the key to his understanding.

He said people who ate a low-sodium, mostly plant-based diet, exercised daily, had a good social support group, didn’t smoke, didn’t drink often, slept well and found ways to manage stress often recovered from pain the fastest — sometimes even before undergoing surgery.

But the medical expert said that while it was his “lightbulb moment”, it actually caused him a bigger problem due to systemic greed.

Dr Goobie said: “TThe problem is that our medical system is not set up that way… Things are set up in such a way that hospitals have to make money. They have to grow economically.

“The problem is, if you find a way to help patients get better without resorting to a pill or surgery, then the hospital and the doctor are in big trouble.

“If you find a way to help patients get better and you can’t charge them for it, then you’re out of a job.”

He continued: “I really felt like the goal of medicine was in the wrong place – it wasn’t about healing, it was about making money through surgeries, pills, images and anything that can make you money…

“The incentives were not good. Once I understood what was happening was a huge problem for me ethically.

“I was doing work that I no longer believed in.”

But Dr Goobie admitted he had to continue performing surgeries to ensure he and his wife continued to receive a salary.

“It tore me apart. I gained 40 pounds. I was really sad. I was really angry, frustrated, I had no hope. I thought I was stuck…

“I knew I was dying inside and my body was dying,” he shared.

However, after discussing his problems with his wife, she encouraged him to leave the medical field altogether and continue without a clear plan.

Dr Goobie admitted he was “embarrassed” and “uncomfortable” at first, but admitted it was ultimately “liberating” to be able to decide what he wanted to do with his life.

At the end of the clip, he added: “When you let go of something that you’re holding on to too tightly, even if it hurts, and you let go of it, then you’re able to take something else that’s hopefully better for you…

“Trust your heart, lean on the people who love you, and do what you have to do, whatever it may be.”
