Former Louisiana Senator Announces Candidacy for Louisiana Public Service Commissioner

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Former Louisiana Senator Julie Quinn-Summerville announces she is running for Louisiana Public Service Commissioner for District 2.

In a statement from Quinn-Summerville’s office, she is seeking the vacancy after former commissioner Craig Greene announced he would not seek re-election in the next term.

Quinn-Summerville is a former school board member, state senator and 2016 alternate delegate to elect Donald Trump for president.

She has won the support of former Louisiana Republican Party chairmen Roger Villere and Louis Gurvich for the vacant seat.

Before becoming a state senator, Quinn-Summerville was elected to the Jefferson Parish School Board in 2001 and 2003. After serving on the school board, she was elected to the Louisiana State Senator in 2005 and 2007, representing New Orleans and a four-parish area. She chaired the Judiciary Committee, which oversees the needs of judges and courthouses, and was named Legislator of the Year, according to a news release.

“The next public service commissioner will either lean toward a more conservative party or a more liberal party,” Quinn-Summerville said. “I am a fiscal conservative who believes that the federal government under Joe Biden has overstepped its authority and is forcing businesses, particularly utilities, to make unnecessary infrastructure changes that are being passed on to consumers. We must stand firm against unfunded mandates. We must do what is in the best interest of today’s consumers. We can and will return to the lowest utility rates in the country under the right leadership. That is why I am running.”

The primary elections are scheduled for November 5 and the congressional elections for December 7.
