‘His name is Yahweh’: Indian-American Harmeet Dhillon harassed for praying to ‘foreign god’ during NCR

Sikh Republican Harmeet Dhillon, who delivered the “Ardas” prayer at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, was criticized on social media for praying to “a foreign god.” The backlash came after part of the prayer stated that “there is only one God.”

The Republican responded by posting: “I block a lot of people…”

She also expressed gratitude for saving Trump’s life in her prayer.

Calling it “blasphemy,” an X user named George wrote on X: “ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE!! I have nothing but respect for Harmeet Dhillon but I would advise against anyone who urged her to pray to a foreign god, there is only one true God we pray to and his name is not what she said. His name is YAHWEH and his only Son is Jesus Christ.”

In an interview with the New York Post, Dhillon expressed gratitude for the positive response she has received, saying, “Overall, while the voices of haters can be artificially amplified online, I would say the vast majority of the answers to my prayer from mainstream Republicans have been positive, and I am grateful for that.”

Several people also came out in support of Dhillon, saying the hatred directed at him “is totally misplaced.”

“America has always respected minority religious groups, as long as they behave as good citizens and respect the majority religion,” Christopher F Rufo said on X.

Dhillon added that RNC delegates approved his decision to offer the prayer.

“Don’t paint me as a victim. Yes, there are definitely negative comments online, but the RNC members, the RNC delegates from the Trump campaign approved of me saying this prayer,” Dhillon said.

“We ran the script through them and no one expressed any regret about it,” she added.
