  • The RS6 Avant replacement could receive a plug-in hybrid V8 developing more than 700 hp.
  • The RS7 Avant will feature a distinctive body kit, with wide fenders.

The much-loved Audi RS6 Avant is on its way out, and soon it will no longer exist. Fortunately, this does not mean that Audi is giving up on powerful and aggressive station wagons, as it plans to replace the RS6 with the upcoming RS7 Avant. In addition to the new name, this station wagon will receive some significant improvements.

Spotted during a street test around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the RS7 Avant will look every bit as bold as the model it replaces. That’s good news for fans and future owners alike, but the new model will have to be as bold as BMW prepares to challenge its leadership with the upcoming M5 Touring.

This prototype has been fitted with a distinctive front fascia that includes a large single-piece grille as well as a pair of sharp, eye-catching air intakes. The headlights appear slightly smaller than those of the outgoing model, but retain an equally menacing shape with integrated LED daytime running lights.

Like previous iterations of the RS6, the new model’s wheel arches are also much wider than those of the standard A7. Underneath these wheel arches sit new multi-spoke wheels with a black finish and, while they’re not visible in these photos, a set of massive brakes will sit behind them.

Audi engineers have done a brave job of hiding the rear, but we can see two oval-shaped exhaust outlets located further inboard compared to the current RS6 Avant. New lights are also present, with a light bar running the entire width.

Little is known about the RS7 Avant’s powertrain. Given that more and more performance models like this are switching to hybrid systems, it would be reasonable to assume that the RS7 will follow suit. This would make sense since many VW Group brands, including Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley, offer plug-in hybrid V8s. If this setup makes its way into the RS7, we expect it to produce over 700 hp.
