F1 News: Sergio Perez’s nightmare continues with shocking Hungarian GP crash

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez suffered a crash during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, forcing him to retire in Q1 once again. Although the Mexican driver will start from 16th on the grid – a continuation of his recent poor performance – he remains unfazed by his recent string of disappointing performances.

Perez’s crash happened in the final minutes of Q1 when he ran wide at Turn 8, ending up on a wet patch of track, causing him to lose control and hit the barriers. Speaking to the media after the session, Perez explained, as reported by Motorsport Week:

“Yes, it was a big shock, fortunately everything is fine, a little pain in the leg but apart from that everything is fine, but I am ready for the race.”

Reflecting on the incident, Perez conceded that the lap on which he crashed may have been unnecessary as his previous times were sufficient to progress to the next qualifying round.

“I lost it, I think I hit the kerb and at that point it was raining harder at Turn 8 so it was quite late in the corner and it sent me completely into the wall.”

Despite intense scrutiny, Perez is determined to learn from his mistakes to improve his future performance.

“Not really, I was just on a good lap but in hindsight we probably didn’t need that lap, it’s something we’ll look at again.

“But I think these conditions can surprise anyone, but unfortunately I was the one who got hit twice in a row.

“I mean, I’m determined to change things, it’s hard enough to face all the media after all these difficult times, but I think when we come back to it, it will be even sweeter.

“It was very difficult to judge the conditions, it was raining harder but in the end we didn’t lose grip.

“I was improving my lap, so in hindsight, when you think about it, we were safe, we didn’t need to do that lap, but you also know a lot of things after the fact.

“It hurts, you know, that it happened again, especially in the times I’m going through, but yes, I’m determined to turn it around.”

Although the car is not fully equipped with the latest updates, which consist of a new-shaped engine cover, the Mexican driver has noted significant improvements in the RB20’s performance based on test sessions, particularly during longer races.

“I think… yesterday we had a very good day, a very promising day.

“I think we’ve had some really good information from the long races, so hopefully we can have a really good pace to move up the field and hopefully score some points.”

Looking forward, the driver explained that he felt more comfortable with the car. He concluded:

“The feeling with the car is improving, the understanding with it too, so we are clearly making progress.

“Yesterday was probably the best Friday of the season, so there is light at the end of the tunnel, but we just have to get through it and hopefully tomorrow will be the day.”
