Porterhouse opens soon

The sign for Porterhouse Steakhouse on West Eldorado Street has been on display, teasing diners for months.

Well, the time is coming.

The steakhouse restaurant, located at 1044 W. Eldorado St., is expected to open in August. Management has already begun hiring staff.

The Porterhouse menu will include high-quality steaks, sides, salads and appetizers. The owners of the family-owned Garden Restaurant on Pershing Road have been considering opening a steak restaurant for some time, said manager Deemi Islamoski, who is the owner’s daughter.

“It’s something we’re familiar with, so we decided to take the plunge and do it,” she said.

According to Islamoski, his family has more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant business.

“I’ve been working in the restaurant business since I was a kid,” she says.

The owners hired an experienced chef for their new restaurant. “He worked in a steakhouse for a very long time,” Islamoski said.

The restaurant’s hours of operation will be 11am-10pm Saturdays and Sundays and 4pm-10pm Monday through Friday. Updates will be available on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

DISC takes on HIIT

The urge to exercise hits you the moment you walk into the Decatur Indoor Sports Center.

Located at 1295 W. Wood St., the new high-intensity interval training — or HIIT — room is a new addition with updated equipment and trainers to help you get in shape.

“There’s a lot of fun stuff here,” said DISC director Jamie Davis. “You’ll find a lot of cutting-edge equipment here.”

The HIIT pass is an additional cost, $20 per month for individuals or $50 per month for families, to the DISC membership.

The Great Hall was once two dance halls near the entrance to the DISC.

Power racks, deadlift areas and artificial turf are among the new features. “You’re also going to see a lot of transformation and growth here, whether you’re an athlete looking for something to do or a newcomer looking for a high-intensity workout,” Davis said.

According to Tracy Whitten, DISC’s fitness center manager, renovations to the HIIT room began about five months ago. Previous workout classes that were held in the rooms have since moved to different locations. “We’re currently at the Scovill Park West Senior Center,” she said.

The new HIIT room is designed to hit all the preferred intervals, Whitten said. “Everything we do here helps people use their muscles to function and get in shape,” she said. “It’s all designed to help increase muscle mass, endurance and power.”

New members will receive a free introductory class within the first month of membership. Certified personal trainers will be available to assist you. Elite small group training sessions are also available.

“This room is designed for all levels and abilities,” Whitten said.
