Listen to Kim Deal’s stunning new single, “Coast”

Breeders singer and guitarist Kim Deal has shared her new solo single, “Coast.”

The track is Deal’s first solo album under the 4AD label and was produced by the late Steve Albini, who passed away in May. They recorded the track at Albini’s famed Chicago studio, Electrical Audio.

“Coast” is a track that features the band Mucca Pazza, who refine a soundscape inspired by the beach and summer. Despite its brighter elements, the track conveys a more discreet message.

Deal said the song was inspired by a wedding band she saw cover Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville,” which she described as displaying “telling levels of low self-esteem.”

Deal also joins her on the track with her twin sister and Breeders guitarist Kelley Deal and rhythm section Lindsay Glover and Mando Lopez.

“Coast” marks Deal’s first solo song since 2014, when she began a string of 7″ singles shortly after leaving the Pixies.

In 2019, Deal said NME How The Breeders’ 1990 debut album ‘Pod’ inspired Nirvana to work with Albini, saying: “I think they asked Steve Albini to record ‘In Utero’ because they really liked ‘Pod.’

“I remember Dave Grohl saying he really liked the sound of the drums, but I always felt bad for Dave because the drum sound on ‘Pod’ sounds huge because there’s so much empty space for the drums to resonate. Poor Dave had all these guitars and bass playing all the way through.”

In 2022, Grohl joined Deal on stage at a benefit concert to perform a cover of the Pixies classic “Gigantic.”

Earlier this year, Breeders joined Olivia Rodrigo on her “Guts” world tour.
