HBCU Football: Bowie State set for 2024 CIAA season.

Maryland HBCU, Bowie State University prepares for 2024 season under head coach Kyle Jackson. Last season, the Bulldogs finished 6-4. While it wasn’t what they were hoping for, the team learned valuable lessons and showed signs of growth. Coach Jackson sees that as a foundation for the upcoming CIAA season.

“Last season was a blessing,” Jackson said. “We finished sixth and fourth. That’s not what we set out to do, but those four games were a lesson. We lost a game by five points, turned the ball over five times, played six quarterbacks, most of them with no previous experience. Still, we managed to win six games. That’s something to be proud of, but we know our standards and our expectations.”

The Bulldogs were picked to finish fifth in the CIAA’s preseason seeding order. Jackson takes that philosophically. “Make sure you say the Bowie State Bulldogs are ranked fifth in the preseason. Rankings are cool, but the game still has to be played. It’s about execution. I know my guys are watching, the community is watching. We have a grudge against us.”

Spring training was important for the Bulldogs because it allowed the young players to develop. “Spring was great. It gave us a chance to evaluate our roster and see who could help us. It opened our eyes to where we are right now and what goals we need to achieve.”

Bowie State isn’t avoiding competition this season, starting with Davenport and Lenore-Rhyne, two strong programs outside of the CIAA. “We want to put our program in the national spotlight, show that Bowie State football can play with any team. It’s bigger than just Bowie State. It’s about putting HBCU football on that platform.”

Jackson is optimistic about the upcoming season. “These last two years have been a lesson. You have to go through them to grow. The guys are hungry to get back to winning ways, and we have work to do. It’s time to get going.”

With standout defensive back Devin Williams, the Bulldogs are poised to make a significant impact. With 11 breakups and three interceptions last season, Williams is poised to elevate his game even higher.

The CIAA Football Championship is November 16th in Salem, Virginia and Bowie State has its sights set on being there. Coach Jackson and the Bulldogs are ready to show what they are made of. Get ready for an exciting season of HBCU football!
