Man’s Ancestry DNA Test Produces Shocking Results: ‘I Don’t Know If It’s Normal’

A man keen to learn more about his ancestry was shocked after a DNA test produced unexpected results.

Americans want to know more about their past. According to a 2022 survey of just over 2,100 American adults conducted by OnePoll on behalf of genealogy company Ancestry, 66% of respondents want to know more about their family history.

Greg Curry, a photographer from Cape Breton Island, Canada, wanted to know more about his origins, so in 2016, he and his wife decided to take a DNA test to trace their lineage.

“I am interested in my family history and did some research on my immediate ancestry before taking the test,” Curry said. Newsweek“I was curious to see what would happen. At the time, there was a lot of talk about the possibility of finding something that we might not know about.”

Curry said he didn’t expect “anything specific” from the results he got and had an idea of what might come of it.

“I knew I had strong Scottish and Irish ancestry,” he said.

His wife’s results were quite unexpected. “My wife had had some surprises when it came to Italian and North African cuisine, so I was hoping to find something interesting that I wasn’t aware of,” he said.

He nervously opened his results to see what secrets might be revealed. As he scanned the screen, Curry admitted he was “a little shocked” by what he read.

According to the test results, Curry is 100% from Northwestern Europe and, more specifically, 100% British and Irish. The results were confirmed by a handy visual aid representing Great Britain and Ireland as a huge shade of blue. This blue represented Curry.

“It was funny to see the ring on my profile that was all one color, compared to my wife who had multiple,” he said. “Over the years, I really thought there had to be something else.”

Although it came as a shock, Curry was able to see the funny side of it, posting a slideshow on his TikTok account (@greg_curry) confirming that there was “0 percent diversity” in his family tree.

In some ways, it wasn’t a huge shock to Curry, even though he expected to see at least one other color on screen. He’s yet to meet anyone who’s experienced the same thing.

“I’m from Cape Breton Island in Canada and I would imagine other locals might get similar results because we have a strong Scottish and Irish history here,” he said.

“It’s still incredible to have 100%! I’ve spoken to some friends and they don’t have 100%, so I don’t know if that’s normal.”

Clearly, given the lack of any real surprise, the experience hasn’t changed much about how Curry sees himself.

“I am proud of my heritage and have since learned more about my family’s history on the island,” he said.

Curry would also encourage others to explore their own family heritage if they have the opportunity.

“I think it’s very interesting, and you never know, you might discover something new about yourself… or in my case,” he joked.
