  • President Joe Biden has announced that he is dropping his bid for re-election.
  • The move comes after weeks of infighting among Democrats over Biden’s ability to beat Donald Trump.
  • Here’s what Biden had to say to the nation about his decision.

President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he is withdrawing from the presidential race.

It’s a dramatic upset that follows weeks of infighting within the Democratic Party over whether Biden has the momentum to defeat former President Donald Trump in November.

In his note to the nation, Biden said he would share more details about his decision in the coming days. Shortly after, he signaled his support for Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place at the top of the ticket.

Read a copy of the historic letter below:

My fellow Americans,
Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a nation.
Today, America’s economy is the strongest in the world. We’ve made historic investments to rebuild our nation, to lower the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, and to expand health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided much-needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. We’ve passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. We’ve appointed the first African-American woman to the Supreme Court. And we’ve passed the most significant climate legislation in world history. America has never been better positioned to lead than it is today.
I know that none of this could have been accomplished without you, the American people. Together, we have weathered an unprecedented pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We have protected and preserved our democracy. And we have revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.
It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while I intend to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country that I step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
I will speak to the Nation in more detail about my decision later this week.
At this point, let me express my deepest gratitude to everyone who worked so hard to see me reelected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all of this work. And let me express my deepest gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust they have placed in me.
I believe today what I have always believed: Nothing is impossible for Americans, if we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America.
Joe Biden
