We Need This 1930s-Inspired Mercedes-Maybach Now

From the house Beautiful

It’s rare that a convertible is more beautiful than its coupe counterpart. The Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 Cabriolet, which debuted in August at Monterey Car Week, is a glorious exception. The Maybach Vision 6 Coupe, which debuted in 2016, was lovely, but this one is simply exquisite.

With the roof down, the Vision 6 Cabriolet evokes the type of small speedboat you might see on the Côte d’Azur, with its long, slender tail. Its rich blue exterior paint, aptly named Nautical Blue Metallic, and white leather interior probably also help to conjure up maritime images.

This masterpiece is over 20 feet long and features many art deco design details. The wheels measure 24 inches in diameter and feature rose gold painted center-lock hubs. Mercedes claims the large grille at the front was inspired by a pinstripe suit, but its inclusion doesn’t actually provide any functional benefit.

That’s because the Vision 6 Cabriolet is all-electric. It features floor-mounted batteries that power a 750-hp electric motor and provide a range of 200 miles. Under the Vision 6 Cabriolet’s long hood, it looks like there’s built-in luggage and a picnic kit, rather than an internal combustion engine.

Inside, there’s all the Napa leather and rose gold trim you’d expect, as well as a wooden floor. Once again, Mercedes is emphasizing the Vision 6 convertible’s nautical influence.

It’s unclear whether Mercedes will produce a bespoke Maybach like this, as its ultra-luxury division currently only modifies standard Benz models. Either way, it’s a sign of gloriously luxurious things to come.
